Sites overview: 6-day tour from Casablanca

Casablanca City!

Casablanca, a port city and commercial hub in western Morocco, faces the Atlantic Ocean. The city’s downtown Mauresque architecture, which combines Moorish and European art deco styles, reflects its French colonial heritage. The massive Hassan II Mosque, constructed in 1993, stands partly over the water and features a 210-meter minaret topped with lasers pointing toward Mecca.

Rabat City!

Rabat, Morocco’s capital, sits on the banks of the Bouregreg River and the Atlantic Ocean. It is noted for landmarks that reflect its Islamic and French-colonial origins, such as the Udayas’ Kasbah. The city’s famed Hassan Tower, a 12th-century minaret, rises over the ruins of a mosque.

Volubilis!

Volubilis is a partially excavated Berber-Roman city in Morocco near Meknes that may have served as the capital of the Kingdom of Mauretania beginning with King Juba II. Gilda may have served as the kingdom’s capital prior to Volubilis.

Meknes City!

Meknes is a city in northern Morocco. It is famed for its imperial history, featuring relics such as Bab Mansour, a massive gate with arches and mosaic tile. The gate leads to the former imperial city. The Mausoleum of Sultan Moulay Ismail, who established the city as his capital in the 17th century, features courtyards and fountains. To the south, the destroyed Heri es-Souani is a massive structure that was previously utilized as a stable and food storage facility.

Fes City!

In the eighth and ninth centuries CE, under Idrisid control, Fez was established. It originally consisted of two independent, rival communities. Early in the ninth century, successive waves of mostly Arab immigration from Ifriqiya (Tunisia) and al-Andalus (Spain and Portugal) gave the emerging metropolis its Arab identity.

Ziz Valley!

The massive Ziz Valley, or Ziz Gorges, which begin about south of Rich in the Middle Atlas and about 30 kilometers north of Errachidia, offer a rocky route south through the Tunnel du Zaabel, which the French constructed in 1928.

Merzouga desert!

Merzouga is a small Moroccan village in the Sahara Desert, close to the Algerian border. It is recognized as the gateway to Erg Chebbi, a vast expanse of sand dunes north of town. Dayet Srji, located west of Merzouga, is a seasonal salt lake that is frequently dry throughout the summer months. When full, it draws a diverse group of migratory and desert species, including desert warblers, Egyptian nightjars, and, on occasion, flamingos.

Rissani City!

The past of Rissani is legendary. Sijilmassa, the renowned capital of the desert, was located in Rissani between the 14th and the 18th centuries. It was the location of lucrative slave and gold trades. For producing leather of the highest caliber, Rissani is renowned.

Todra Gorge!

The Todgha Gorges are a series of limestone river gorges, also known as wadis, in Morocco’s eastern High Atlas Mountains, near Tinerhir. On their final 40 kilometers across the highlands, the Todgha and nearby Dades rivers carved up these steep, cliff-sided canyons.

Ait Ben-Haddou Kasbah!

The name of this particular settlement is derived from the tribal group the residents belong to (Ait) and from their family name (Ben Haddou), where ‘ben’ in Arabic denotes a son or sons.

Marrakech City!

Marrakesh, a former imperial city in western Morocco, is a major commercial hub that houses mosques, palaces, and gardens. Medina is a densely packed, walled medieval city from the Berber Empire, with maze-like lanes and bustling souks (marketplaces) selling traditional fabrics, pottery, and jewelry. The Moorish minaret of the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque serves as a city icon and can be seen for kilometers.
