Sites overview: 5-Day Tour From Tangier
Tangier City!
The Romans ruled over what is now known as Tangier in the first century BCE. The Vandals arrived and set off on their journey across Africa from here. Tangier was an integral element of the Byzantine Empire between the fourth and fifth centuries. Early in the year 700, the Arabs arrived.
Chefchaouen City!
Chefchaouen, sometimes known as Chaouen, is a city in the Rif Mountains in northwest Morocco. It is famous for its beautiful, blue-washed houses in the old town. Leather and weaving workshops flank the steep, cobblestoned alleyways. The Chefchouen Ethnographic Museum and the red-walled Kasbah, a 15th-century fortification and prison, are located on Place Outa el Hammam’s shaded main plaza. The octagonal minaret of the Great Mosque is nearby.
Archaeological Site of Volubilis!
Volubilis is a partially excavated Berber-Roman city in Morocco near Meknes that may have served as the capital of the Kingdom of Mauretania beginning with King Juba II. Gilda may have served as the kingdom’s capital prior to Volubilis.
Meknès City!
Meknes is a city in northern Morocco. It is famed for its imperial history, featuring relics such as Bab Mansour, a massive gate with arches and mosaic tile. The gate leads to the former imperial city. The Mausoleum of Sultan Moulay Ismail, who established the city as his capital in the 17th century, features courtyards and fountains. To the south, the destroyed Heri es-Souani is a massive structure that was previously utilized as a stable and food storage facility.
Fes City!
Fez, which was established in the ninth century, reached its zenith during the Marinid era in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, when it took Marrakesh’s place as the kingdom’s capital. The main structures in the medina, including the madrasas, fondouks, palaces, homes, mosques, and fountains, date from this time period.
Merzouga Desert!
Merzouga is a small Moroccan village in the Sahara Desert, close to the Algerian border. It is recognized as the gateway to Erg Chebbi, a vast expanse of sand dunes north of town. Dayet Srji, located west of Merzouga, is a seasonal salt lake that is frequently dry throughout the summer months. When full, it draws a diverse group of migratory and desert species, including desert warblers, Egyptian nightjars, and, on occasion, flamingos.
Todgha Gorges!
The Todgha Gorges are a series of limestone river gorges, also known as wadis, in Morocco’s eastern High Atlas Mountains, near Tinerhir. On their final 40 kilometers across the highlands, the Todgha and nearby Dades rivers carved up these steep, cliff-sided canyons.
Dades Valley!
The Dadès Gorges, also known as the Dades Valley on most Morocco travel itineraries, are a series of steep wadi gorges cut out by the Dadès River in Morocco.
Ouarzazate City!
Ouarzazate is a city south of Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains that serves as a gateway to the Sahara Desert. Its massive Taourirt Kasbah, which houses a 19th-century palace, offers vistas of the harsh surrounding scenery that has appeared in various films. Aït Ben Haddou, a fortified red-earth city, is northwest. Todra Gorge, located to the northeast, is rocky. A route leads southeast through the Draa Valley’s beautiful palm groves to the desert.
Ait-Ben-Haddou!
Aït Benhaddou is an ancient ighrem or ksar along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakesh, Morocco. It is regarded as a magnificent example of Moroccan earthen clay building and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
Atlas Mountains!
The Atlas Mountains stretch over 2,500 kilometers across northern Africa, dividing the Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines from the Sahara Desert. The Atlas Mountains are a succession of ranges with distinct geography, weather, and animals. They are populated with Berber communities and riven with gorges and ravines. Toubkal, the tallest peak in Morocco’s Toubkal National Park, stands at 4,167 meters.
Marrakech City!
Marrakesh, a former imperial city in western Morocco, is a major commercial hub that houses mosques, palaces, and gardens. Medina is a densely packed, walled medieval city from the Berber Empire, with maze-like lanes and bustling souks (marketplaces) selling traditional fabrics, pottery, and jewelry. The Moorish minaret of the 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque serves as a city icon and can be seen for kilometers.
